O Glorious Saint Vincent de Paul, The mention of your name, Suggests a litany of your virtues: Humility, zeal, mercy, self-sacrifice. It also recalls Your many foundations: Works of Mercy, Congregations, Societies. The Church gratefully remembers, Your promotion of the priesthood. Inspire all Charitable Workers, Especially those who minister, To both the spiritually And the materially poor. Our Spiritual Father Archabbot Douglas Nowicki, O.S.B.

Abbot Innocent Wolf, OSB (1843-1922)

In 1876, St. Benedict’s Priory (in Kansas) became an abbey, and its monks elected 33 year old Father Innocent Wolf, OSB of St. Vincent Archabbey as their first abbot. He guided the life of the community for 45 years, seeing it grow from 20 members in 1876 to 97 members at the time of his retirement in 1921. An account of the life and influence of the community’s fatherly leader is found in Kansas Monks, chapters 5 - 8. Abbot Innocent was of the first generation of young boys to come to Abbot Boniface Wimmer’s foundation in America, and he remained always a devoted spiritual son of the patriarch-founder. The relationship between the two abbots was frank and friendly — those of a father and his adult son. Fulfilling an often expressed hope of Abbot Wimmer, the monks of St. Vincent Archabbey elected Abbot Innocent to be his successor at the time of his death in 1887. While declining the election in order to remain at St. Benedict’s Abbey, Abbot Innocent himself attained to a revered stature in the life of the American Cassinese Congregation of Benedictines. St. Lambert of Maastricht, O.S.B.

Bishop, martyr, and patron of St. Willibrord’s missions. He was the son of a noble family of Maastricht, Flanders, Belgium, educated by St. Theodard and succeeding him as bishop of Tongres-Maastricht in 668 when Theodard was murdered. He was driven from his see by Ebroin, the tyrannical mayor of the royal palace, and lived as a Benedictine in Stavelot until 681, when he was reinstated. When Lambert denounced the Mayor of the Palace Pepin of Heristal for adultery, he was murdered in Liege, Belgium. (from catholic.org)

Trusting fully in Your infinite mercy and in the maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and has shown us that holiness is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life and is the way of achieving eternal communion with you. Grant us, by his intercession, and according to Your will, the graces we implore, hoping that he will soon be numbered among your saints. Amen

Novices 2009-2010

Do not grant newcomers to the monastic life an easy entry, but, as the Apostle says, Test the spirits to see if they are from God (1 John 4:1). Therefore, if someone comes and keeps knocking at the door, and if at the end of four or five days he has shown himself patient in bearing his harsh treatment and difficulty of entry, and has persisted in his request, then he should be allowed to enter and stay in the guest quarters for a few days. After that, he should live in the novitiate, where the novices study, eat and sleep. A senior chosen for his skill in winning souls should be appointed to look after them with careful attention. The concern must be whether the novice truly seeks God and whether he shows eagerness for the Work of God, for obedience and for trials. The novice should be clearly told all the hardships and difficulties that will lead him to God. If he promises perseverance in his stability, then after two months have elapsed let this rule be read straight through to him, and let him be told: "This is the law under which you are choosing to serve. If you can keep it, come in. If not, feel free to leave." If he still stands firm, he is to be taken back to the novitiate, and again thoroughly tested in all patience. After six months have passed, the rule is to be read to him, so that he may know what he is entering. If once more he stands firm, let four months go by, and then read this rule to him again. If after due reflection he promises to observe everything and to obey every command given him, let him then be received into the community. But he must be well aware that, as the law of the rule establishes, from this day he is no longer free to leave the monastery, nor to shake from his neck the yoke of the rule which, in the course of so prolonged a period of reflection, he was free either to reject or to accept.

St. Walburga

St. Walburga, Virgin (Feast day - February 25) Walburga was born in Devonshire England, around 710. She was the daughter of a West Saxon chieftain and the sister of St. Willibald and Winebald. Walburga was educated at Wimborne Monastery in Dorset, where she became a nun. In 748, she was sent with St. Lioba to Germany to help St. Boniface in his missionary work. She spent two years at Bishofsheim, after which she became Abbess of the double monastery at Heidenheim founded by her brother Winebald. At the death of Winebald, St. Walburga was appointed Abbess of both monasteries by her brother Willibald, who was then Bishop of Eichstadt. She remained superior of both men and women until her death in 779. She was buried first at Heidenheim, but later her body was interred next to that of her brother, St. Winebald, at Eichstadt. Morning Adoration

My God, we adore You here in the Blessed Sacrament. As we kneel before You, we recognize You as the Creator of all Life. We thank You and praise You for the lives you have given to us and to those we love. Give us a true and lasting respect for all life, for we recognize it as coming from You. We pray for all who have suffered or died as a result of disrespect whether that suffering and death has come as a result of abuse, war, gossip, or abortion. We pray for an end for all disrespect of life. As we kneel before You we ask You to forgive all those who do not respect the sanctity of life. We repeat the words you spoke as you hung on the cross, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'

Investiture 2009

Tomorrow our 4 new Novices will be invested in the holy habit, receive the monastic tonsure, a new name, the Rule of our Holy Father Saint Benedict and begin their year long novitiate under the guidance of the Novice Master. Please remember these 4 new brothers in your prayers as they discern the call to monastic life here at Saint Vincent Archabbey.

May our spiritual fathers be guided by the examples of Saints Peter and Paul, all the Apostles and their saintly successors. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all your people throughout the world. May the light of your Truth shine through their lives and their good works. Assist all spiritual fathers, that through your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brothers Sent on a Journey (RB, Chapter 67)

Let the brethren who are sent on a journey commend themselves to the prayers of all the brethren and of the Abbot; and always at the last prayer of the Work of God let a commemoration be made of all absent brethren. When brethren return from a journey, at the end of each canonical Hour of the Work of God on the day they return, let them lie prostrate on the floor of the oratory and beg the prayers of all on account of any faults that may have surprised them on the road, through the seeing or hearing of something evil, or through idle talk. And let no one presume to tell another whatever he may have seen or heard outside of the monastery, because this causes very great harm. But if anyone presumes to do so, let him undergo the punishment of the Rule. And let him be punished likewise who would presume to leave the enclosure of the monastery and go anywhere or do anything, however small, without an order from the Abbot.

Blessed Virgin Mary, who can worthily repay you with praise and thanks for having rescued a fallen world by your generous consent! Receive our gratitude, and by your prayers obtain the pardon of our sins. Take our prayers into the sanctuary of heaven and enable them to make our peace with God. Holy Mary, help the miserable, strengthen the discouraged, comfort the sorrowful, pray for your people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women consecrated to God. May all who venerate you feel now your help and protection. Be ready to help us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it your continual concern to pray for the people of God, foryou were blessed by God and were made worthy to bear the Redeemer of the world, who lives and reigns forever.
